General Manager, Applied Labs – Innovation Office
Gordon Gay joined NEC Australia in 1996 and was appointed to the role of General Manager, Wireless Mobility in 2012. Gordon has in excess of 25 years’ experience in working on leading-edge technology in the areas of signal processing. This fundamental technology underpins all of today’s advances in the digital economy. He has had a diverse employment experience, from a start-up, to defence, to communications, to IoT and big data.
The group Gordon leads in Australia focuses on both future technology and bringing solutions to market. The group’s current interests are on various technologies such as 5G and beyond; biometrics, data analytics and cyber. This underpins NEC’s vision, “To be a leading global company leveraging the power of innovation to realize an information society ….”
Gordon’s group currently holds over 135 international patents in communications-related technologies; a number of these patents are standards essential and are in every mobile phone/device produced globally. Cumulatively, the group has received in excess of AU$200m of funding from NEC Corporation and represents NEC Corporation in the RAN1, 3GPP standards.
Gordon has taken up a new role to head NEC’s innovation Office in Australia. This will incorporate the existing NEC Australia Applied Labs. The remit of this group is to explore creating customer- driven innovation, leveraging technology from NEC labs locally or globally, partners or other vendors.
