After enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, Ray gained his qualifications as a Radio Technician Ground. He then spent the next 7 years working on radar and ground communications systems as well as spending his last 2 years as an instructor at the RAAF School of Radio.
Following his discharge, he then spent the next 12 years with the WA Police working with their Radio Support Unit. He then resigned from WA Police and after an 8-month stint working on Rail Line communication in the Pilbara for Union Switch and Signal Ray joined St John Ambulance WA where he has spent the last 15 years working on their communications systems.
