You can’t predict natural disasters, but you can be prepared for them. In 2011 JVCKENWOOD implemented a 20 Site P25 Trunking system covering the Island of Puerto Rico. The many challenges with diverse landscapes, high elevation, flat coastal areas, lush tropical rainforest and the geographical location that placed the island in a frequent hurricane zone were all design considerations. The public safety agencies of Puerto Rico demanded a platform that could withstand the most extreme conditions. The real test came in September 2017 when Hurricane Maria, with winds up to 175 mph, directly hit the island. This is the story of how a public safety system performed and served the first responders of Puerto Rico and the lessons learned in coordinating emergency communications in the most extreme conditions.
