The Tasmania Police has over 1200 officers in approximately 73 stations spread across the state, with many of their officers working alone in remote areas. With an eye on improving officer safety while also improving evidence gathering, they commenced research in 2017 into the feasibility of equipping up to 800 frontline officers with body- worn cameras. Included in their research was the idea of leveraging the ‘cloud’ to not only reduce costs but to increase functionality and ensure a timely rollout with limited staff.
This session will outline their research and procurement process as well as provide an update on the deployment of the cameras and cloud-based digital evidence management platform. They will also outline their vision for the use of additional information management capabilities such as smartphone apps to enhance traditional policing methods for capturing and managing digital evidence.
