Critical communications has been designated as one of the three pillars of future 5G systems. Initially (Release 15), it looks as if enhanced mobile broadband will be the focus of commercial carriers. However, the long-term success of 5G (Releases 16 & beyond) appears to depend on the full development of 2 other pillars: massive IoT and ultrareliable low latency communications, which involve industry, critical national infrastructure and public safety. What must the critical communications industry do now to make sure critical users have access to a much richer services and applications environment during the 2020s?
