Hazardous environments exist in many places such as sugar mills, petrochemical facilities, grain silos and coalmines. For each of these locations, the type of hazardous environment is known, and equipment used and procedures for working in these places are well understood. Intrinsic Safety standards have been developed around these types of static locations. Firefighting on the other hand must deal with all these environments and occasionally unknown environments. Radio equipment that can be operated in all environments without being a source of ignition is not possible. Due to the complexity of the standards, maintenance requirements, the number of staff required to be trained and geographical spread of firefighters across the state, NSW Fire & Rescue have had to rethink their approach to the use of Intrinsically Safe radios.
