Critical alerting using RF technologies has been evolving since it’s inception over 50 years ago. From the early technologies of Golay, 2-Tone, 5-tone, POCSAG and Flex paging to cellular technologies such as SMS, 2/3/4G data to Smart Phone Apps.

Most emergency responders are using a combination of standard paging networks as well as more modern “smart” devices. One of the most frequently asked questions by users is “why are we still using pagers?”. The interesting thing is that not only are agencies still maintaining legacy paging networks, they are also investing in new networks.

To better understand this we will look into the reasons why legacy paging networks exist including case studies both local and overseas.

Presentation outline:

  • Why Paging?
  • Limitations of Paging
  • Bringing technologies together including IoT and cellular based solutions
  • Is it secure?
  • Case studies of new and existing networks and devices
  • Summary and questions
